DWD FAX meteo charts on 11638 kHz

The 05:06 UTC chart (rotated 90 deg clockwise)
This morning I managed to receive 7 meteo charts prepared by the German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst - DWD) and transmitted over their Pinneberg LF/HF facility. The transmission took place on the DDK8 channel, 11638.0 kHz (USB carrier 11636.1 kHz).

This transmission is not listed in the regular DWD schedule and the exclusive recipient is the German icebreaker RV Polarstern of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI), which operates in the Arctic region. The charts are "condensed", there are are four smaller charts in landscape mode within each chart transmitted.

I used my Icom IC-706 MkII radio and an old decoding program, JVComm32 (v 2.0.1). The antenna is a trap dipole for 40 and 80m.

According to posts in the UDXF mailing list, DWD has also activated station DDK7 on 15988.0 kHz for the same service.

  1. Hi Costas, today the 25th of september and leave the PC and multipsk in auto decode fax but didn't receive any picture from 4 UTC to 15 UTC :( Do you know any kind of "schedule" even if it is not a official chart.
I am living about at 100 km east from Germany, I generally receive well DDK trx

    1. I received 11638 in the morning (05:00 UTC) and 15988 in the early afternoon, but it seems that there is no regular schedule.

  2. thank you very much for your anwser, I will try again some others days.
